"You'll never see anything bigger than Rome"
Horace, Carmen saecula, 11-12
Today's Rome reflects the stratification of the epochs of its long history, but also a great and modern metropolis. The large old town contains many ruins of ancient Rome, but few areas have medieval ruins. There are many art treasures from the Renaissance, Baroque churches and palaces, many examples of Art Nouveau, neo-classical, modern, rational and other artistic styles of the nineteenth and twentieth century. the city can be considered a sort of walking encyclopedia of the last 3000 years of Western art.
The historic center is identified with the ancient imperial walls. Some areas were reorganized after the unification, during the Fascist period and through the creation of new districts.
During World War II, Rome has been the subject of heavy bombing and battle and was declared "open city": Unlike Berlin and Warsaw, the city of Rome was saved from total destruction.
After the war, Rome continued to expand thanks to the 'administration and industry, including through the establishment of new neighborhoods and suburbs: the urban plan was amended at the hands of designers Eng. Massimo Piacentini for the IACP and the arch. Gustavo Giovagnini with Garbatella.
Today Rome is one of the most important tourist destinations, due to its archaeological, artistic treasures and the uniqueness and beauty of its views and its villas.
